So im driving to work this morning down the perimeter, and all of a suddden it just totally bogs down. I could maintain 100 km/h, but just barely. Anyways, now it feels like its running on 5 cylinders. Its sluggish as hell and shakes like a tractor at a stop. I've noticed when im accelerating it sort of makes a shiver sound, sounds like its comming from behind me, but I could be hearing it wrong. It smells terribly like burning oil, and when I got home I looked under the hood and their was oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Im hoping its a plug or wire, but im thinking it might be something bigger like a piston or something internal. Besides checking the plugs and wires, what should I look at? I work construction and need the truck to go to different jobsights through out the day, bussing is not an option, so im going to have to wait until the weekend to get it looked at. I hate driving it like this but I dont really have a choice. And if it is something internal might as well send em through the hood anyways

btw: its a 91 Ford Explorer XL 2WD 4.0l V6

if its running as you say, a cylinder down does seem likley, the burning oil is coming from the oil on the manifold

Heres what I can think of as possible causes;
Blown Head-gasket/Leaky Valve Cover
Cracked Head
Cracked Block

An easy and quick way to check is to look at your dip stick, if it appears "milky" or white in anyway, your getting anti-freeze into your oil and causing damage. This would mean you have a blown head gasket or possibly even a cracked head, or block.

I couldn't tell you why your engine is bogging other than the fact you may be loosing compression or may have done internal damage due to water present in the oil.

Good Luck man

Hope this helps and i'll get back to you if you repost
