Hi Guys, I finally gather the nerve to do my own transmission fluid replacement and I felt like i am doing this correctly but could you chime in just to make sure I am ok? because it's not like I check my own work :-)

1. put car on a ramp
2. unscrew the little screw in the transmission case.

Here is where everything doesn't seem right...based on the video from

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOgs_zbzA5I

when I unscrew the plug, fluids are not supposed to be flowing ...however in my case it did....I got about 2 quarts of fluid gushing down....after all that I realized ...oh I forgot to turn the engine on, I am not suppose to do this with cool engine.

So after I pumped in 2 quarts into the trannny case, I turned the engine on and let it warm up.

then I Unplugged the pump and there you go again the fluid gushed about 2 quarts until it finally just drips...after that I plugged everything back in and do the run thru the gear and back to park.

After that I drove around and everything seems fine but there this uneasy feeling somehow I didn't put enough fluid in.

at the same time maybe the previous owner overfilled the transmission?

Anyway please ease my mind or give me an advice.

Thank's fellas.

ps: the fluid is not that bad just a little brownish and still smell pretty good...supposedly the last tranny fluid change was 15K ago.

i just replaced my trans ( remanufactured ) it took 12 quarts, it was totally empty, after warm up with engine running, the instructions that came with the trans said it is suppose to drip then screw in the bolt. i suggest you replace the filter, top it off & take it to have your fluid replaced, the way you are doing it is ok, but how many quarts did you replace? if you don't want to replace the filter then at least have the fluid changed again periodically until you feel that the fuid that is in there is newer than what you started with.

Actually I forgot to mention that my tranny was rebuilt 15K ago so I have new filter in the tranny...I'm just paranoid that I want to make sure I have enough fluids... I ended up using 4 qts but 4 qts got spit out until dripping.

i think this needs to be done with vehicle level.

Yes I would think that parking it on ramps had a large part in the fluid you got out of it.

This is an old thread, but in case someone sees it, I will throw out this 2 cents worth: The Tranny plug is a two part system. The large 22mm part would be removed to drain the case. The small 3/16 in. hex or torx inner plug is just for checking full level, and/or adding more fluid if required via the small hose adapter. It sounds like you just removed the inner plug and didn't drain the pan so much as drained only the 'over-full two quarts' that was already in the transmission.
