My temperature gauge says that it's hot when it's really cold.

Is this an easy fix? I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Pick-up with 185,00 miles. After driving 5 minutes or so on my way to work the temperature gauge zoomed from normal to Hot then settle back to the normal then zoomed back to Hot. My engine is cold this morning and my temperature gauge reads Hot. I don't think this is a thermostat problem. Any suggestions?

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the Ranger section. I suspect that the temperature sending unit is faulty.
