before i purchased this X, i drove other people's X on test drives. everyone else's had a quick pickup off the line. this X is really sluggish. i really didn't think much of it because i figured that it wasn't a big deal to fix. what do i need to do to fix this problem? i saw something on the TIPS section on this board and it mentioned cleaning out something around the MAF. i don't remember off the top of my head, but is that a possible solution? has anyone else ran into this issue? btw...4x4 is not engaged.

Xs will never be "quick off the line" without major mods. You are prolly just getting used to it, so it seems slow. For tips on the best mods, search INTAKE, EXHAUST, and CHIPS.

May I suggest just cleaning or replacing your air filter. I have a K+N on mine and whenever its feels sluggish, I pull out the air filter and clean it (its usually dirty). After that, it feels like a new car again.

baehan,
Besides maintenance issues and that your truck is 10 years old, it could have a very high gear ratio in the differentials. This will decrease acceleration but give you better highway mileage. There is a sticker on the driver door with an axle code. Decode it here: http://www.users.qwest.net/~ntrpriz/main.htm

A lower number means higher ratio gears. Lower the number, lower the rpms at any given speed. Thus, better highway but worse off the line. Good luck!

my axle code is D4

Code - D4
Description - Limited Slip
Capacity - 3200
Ratio - 3.73

what does this info mean? it's all giberish to me.

i replaced the air filter today...that didn't make a difference.
anyone in the Phoenix area willing to test drive my X? rick? ;)
well, thanks again guys for all your help. i've learned a lot from this site.

I bought my X last summer and I hate to say it but it is quick off the line. I had to be careful not to spin the rear tires and throw rocks at cars behind me. Everything seems to be stock on it. It is more sluggish and slower off the line with my new 31x10.5's on it.

What size tires are you running? Do you have an automatic or manual? Could they be slipping (higher than normal RPMs when taking off)?

I got beat by a 80's dodge caravan, so I knew something was wrong. My K&N was pretty dirty, but I found the culprit. The dealership had removed the octane bar right by the battery when we complained about pinging. It will eliminate the pinging, but it retards timing 3 degrees. Performance and fuel economy are gone, make sure yours is in.

235 stock tire size
automatic
how can i tell if my gears are slipping?
you know when someone is driving a 5spd and they don't let off of the clutch as they drive...well, that's what it feels like when am in 1st and 2nd gear.

any pics on what i should be looking for as far as the octane bar goes?

(MAF) is the mass air flow. it is the plug right by your air filter with the plug on it.

Right in between where the battery is and the headlight, there are a bunch of wires there. It is a little gray or green connector and if I remember right the octane bar is red? could be wrong? If I have time, I'll take pics.

Your gears can't slip, but the torque converter in your automatic transmission can. When it does, the RPMs will go up a lot quicker than your vehicle seems to accelerate.
