So I was driving to work, and all of the sudden my truck just dies. the check engine light comes on, along with the battery light. So, at this point I am thinking alternator. However, a few moments later, I get it to fire up and run..but it is running extremely rough. My friends also noticed very black smoke exhaust coming out of my tailpipe. What is going on?

could be a lot of things.... its normal for the lights to come on when the engine stalls.......

How is your gas mileage? What does the smoke smell like?

It would help to pull the codes if there are any. Based on the limited info you give, it's either the FPR or O2 sensor. Maybe a dirty MAS.

Awhile back my Navajo had a real bad idle and was spewing black smoke. Replaced the MAS and cleared the codes. Problem fixed and back to running like new.

After fiddling with it today, I am able to get it to start, but the act of putting it into drive and giving it gas is too much and it quits. Then after that point, it takes forever to get it to start again.

As for the MAF, I had the check engine light looked at a few weeks ago and they told me the MAF and the 02 sensor needed to be replaced. I did this work myself, and the CEL came back about a week ago. I hadn't had a chance to get the engine code checked again before this.

Would a failed MAF keep the car from going anywhere? Is something wrong with the tranny then if putting into drive kills it?

Thanks
Brad

With my bad MAS in place I had trouble starting and idling. When I went to put it into gear I had to take the RPM's up high for it to not die. The idle would just be to low for the truck to stay running. I would have so much black smoke it would look like i was trying to kill all the bugs in the area. The carbon was so bad it would leave a ring around the tip of my exhaust pipe. I bought a new MAS from the dealer for around $80. This solved my problem. Essentially the truck thought it had to run super rich when it didn't need to.
