2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4X4
Hello, We have a 2002 Ranger that my wife and I just got about 3 weeks ago.. I been reading a lot on the boards here and see a lot of issues with the 5 speed autos.. Our ranger is a 4X4 and has 116,640 miles on it now.. 600 of that is what we put on it.. I have no tranny issues at all at this time.. No slippage for 2 to 3 flares now issues with OD.. We are a older couple and we will be using the Truck for light duty stuff and we don't plan on pushing or abuse it .. Just driving nice and easy.. Should we be worried about issues cropping up with the tranny? The only other thing I would like to know is timing chain cassettes in the 4.0 L motor.. Again reading the boards and see there are some issues..

Oh!! Also by any chance does anyone have a car fax they could run for us? I would like to see how many owners the truck had and where it was sold out-of?? Hope you can help.. Thanks!! George & Penny

Each transmission has something so it's hard to generalize. The 5R55W has accumulator bore wear, solenoid block, and broken band issues while the 5R55E would have EPC, valve body gasket, and valve body issues. The 4 speeds like the A4LD had problems in the early versions with weak hard parts. They might be similar, but the problems are different.

BrooklynBay, Or anyone how would like to have a opinion..

I have a build sheet for the truck Listed as having a 5R44E/5R55E.. I have a Ford Workshop manual.. I believe it's one of the best investments one can make.. Any way let me look up the Build number on the door and compare it to the manual and see if it's a either or deal!! Hummm strange going by that it's a A5LD/5R55E? Transmission # D.. It does have the dipstick in it if that helps.. build was 10-2002..

I don't know if that will help anymore or not .. From what you say they all have there Owen issues... Just with that kind of mileage already in it,do you think it could run with out issues if we don't push it.. No jack rabbit starts, no step-down passes unless it's a need too kinda thing..

The wife has a 2007 Mustang with another 5 speed auto in it.. Wonder how close they are related? Anyway we got this truck for winter use as she does not want the road salt on her car.. We both like the usefulness on the pickup truck and I'm sure we'll use it year round.. But I would say absolutely no more then 4,000 to 5,000 miles a year would be put on it if that as we both have other daily drivers.. Again I don't know if any of this is relevant.. Whatcha think?
Thank you! BrooklynBay
