I just installed a James Duff 2.5" lift in my 92 XLT. I can't tell how good it is because I have only been on it for one week. But I can tell you that it can be put in with hand tools and a power drill. Its not real hard, but a time hog. I have about 24 hours in it. That includes the dual shock mounts, steering stabilizer, and all new bushings. My cost of the lift and all was $649.42 + shipping. The hoops package complete was $174.96. So you could get the rest for $474.46 + shipping if you don't want the dual shocks. There are a few others on the board that have had this lift far quite a while. Check the past posts for more info. I have both a 2" body lift and the 2.5" JD kit. Both are good, it just depends on what you want out of a lift. I'll give you some pros and cons

The body lift is cheaper and slightly easier to install, but does not replace your soft stock suspension, so if you get it you should also replace the shocks.

The suspension lift is difficult to install because of the rivets, but will give you better flex and a much more controlled ride.

If you're really curious I have instructions of both my suspension lift and body lift on this page, I'm glad I did both, I'm the only person I know that is able to run 33s, with only spending $300 on lifts(100 for body 200 for JD used).

Jim,

I was in your position a few months back and decided on the Rancho 2 1/2 inch lift. It is a bit more expensive I got mine for 719+shocks. For the additional 500 I got extended radius arms, a drop pitman arm, grade 8 fasteners, brake lengthing brackets(which I am not using-got new lines), extended sway bar links+poly bushings, plus extra reinforcement for the bracket that supports the Pass Side axle. In my opinion all worth the extra dollars. Ive been installing it my self and am impressed with the quality of the materials, the instructions are good not the best but good enough.
If cash is the only consideration then the Duff seems to be it, but I think the Rancho is a better value.
I should be finished this weekend( if I can get the time). Cant wait to get it on the trail.

Now what tires....
