Hi
We have a '95 Limited. We also have the 6 time 4x4 flashing from the GEM and no windows. I tried the suggested battery disconnect for 20 minutes to reset the GEM. Worked for about 10 minutes and then the 4x4 started flashing again. I went and got the relays for Relay Module #4. Loved the idea of it being a 5 minute fix. Well an idiot changed the last relay or I am the idiot who needs advice.
I squeezed in and found the relay box exactly where everyone said it should be. I flipped the tabs top and bottom but the top won't move. Squeezed in further and discovered someone has wrapped black duct tape around the box on the long side. This must be 10 years old. I have spent the best part of 2 hours trying to peel the stuff off. Yet it goes behind the box where it is screwed to the dash. This bit of the tape I just cannot get in to remove.
Getting two hands up on this unit is a challenge or even impossible and I am getting a little frustrated. This is why I have walked away, counter to thirty and am trying the collective brains of this great group.
First am I right that the clips top and bottom should just leveraged away from the box to allow the top to pop off? Does it take two hands to get this thing off? If the reason the thing will not budge is because of the final bits if tape stuck between the box and the surface it is mounted on - any suggestions on how I get it free.
Looking at it I cannot figure out how they got the tape on there without removing the unit. Any sane person would have gone top to bottom. Plus I cannot understand why the tape was needed - the tabs are all in place. Plus if they did remove the box to apply the tape they may have put it back so the top is wedged against the metal dash section it is bolted to.
Checked the threads here and cannot find anything like this. I fear I might have to remove the box off the dash. Any suggestions or warning on how I might proceed? For example are the bolts holding this unit on captured nuts or am I going to hear the dreaded sound of the nut falling inside the unit it is attached to?
Any advice gladly accepted except sell the car. It is my wife's and she loves it as long as I can fix it!
