Hi Guys so I just finished Replacing the front and rear timing chain cassettes in a 1997 Ford Explorer SOHC 4.0L. I just got the engine back in and everything ready then went to start it up for the first time and all it does is Rev all the way out then dies. Throttle plate is not stuck. If I hold the pedal down slightly and try to start it then it spits and sputters backfires. (no more timing chain noise which is a plus I guess). What did I do wrong Im kinda freaking out now I followed all the guides from 2000streetrod here

Ok so starting to feel a little better. I think somehow I skipped over the intake mainfold when I was doing my final checks and of course I somehow got the crossover vacuum hose that goes to each side of the manifold and pcv pinched between the upper and lower manifolds when I installed it. However I also found a semi rigid blue hose in that same area not connected and cant seem to find where it goes any help? Thanks in advance.

Ok so found where the blue hose goes and replaced the vacuum hose I pinched and purring like a kitten other than belt sqeeeeeeeeeal lol. Sorry for cluttering up the forum but was having a mini heart attack ;-)

Glad you found your problems. As far as your belt you may have some oil on it. You must be careful but you can take a bar of soap, dry, and hold it to the belt while the engine is running. This will quiet your squeal. Or at least it has helped mine. Watch your fingers.:)

Thanks for the tip. The belt is brand new installed when I put engine back in. Also the tensioner pulley was toast so I replaced that. Is that pulley only meant to go on one way onto the tensioner assy? Maybe I put in on backwards?

I would think that it should only go on one way. Not able to check mine out now for orintation of the pulley. That is to say that it should only have one correct way it should go on.

Yeah the tensioner assembly definitely goes on only one way. The pulley itself looks like it could go either way. She is squealing baaaaad today. Im changing the idler pulley to see if that fixes it. It didn't squeak before with a bad belt and toast tensioner pulley wtf? Also discovered a small coolant drip leaking right onto the passenger side manifold where it connects to the downpipe. Any ideas what could be leaking? I had to bring it back to the guy for a couple days as I need the space but gonna pick it back up Saturday so hoping can get some insight on leak. Thanks guys it runs awesome though thanks to the guides I followed on here.
