Need help removing CV on Toyota

My wife has a Toyota Paseo that I'm replacing the engine on. I've never worked on a front wheel drive car and don't know how to separate cv joints. I suspect they're similar to Explorer's. Can anyone help? Here's a pic. Thanks.

i replace those at work... they are a pita... toyotas use little circlips like the c clips in our rear axleshafts... however, they are made to not clamp together put push outward.. that is what hold it in place and prevents the axleshaft from falling out.... you need 2 prybars of about the 2-3 long size and the car to be supported well in the air..... a second person helps too... you must use the bars to pry from 2 angles so basically you are covering about 2/3 of the shafts diameter and then it will pop out.... the new one will just slide back in then you need to ram it back to get the new circlip back in.....
 






This will all be made clear to me when I remove the boot?

So do I put the prybar at the red dot or the blue? Is it easier to remove at the wheel end? Can I even get the engine out with the cv's still connected?

not sure if the engine will come out with them still connected, but i doubt it... the red dot is where the bars need to be......

It depends on how far you can seperate the engine from the transaxle. Most FWDs will allow you to seperate them enough to remove the engine without interfering with the transaxle or CVs at all (for clutch changes). In my old Civic, I could pull the engine without messing with the transaxle, except to unbolt it of course.
