I know I am new to the forums but I seriously need help! My Explorer is currently out of commission! Today as I went to leave my wifes work my Explorer would not work in reverse. No reverse gear, none. The forward gears worked fine (or so I thought) so my wife and I pushed it back and I started her up and began to drive home. My drive home ws horrible. The forward gears would not shift out of third gear. I was stuck at 30-35mph and around 3000rpms. Whenever I accelerated the tach would reach higher numbers but the transmission would not shift. So 45minutes later I get home (thanks to emergency flashers and my ability to stay calm under pressure). Does anybody have a clue as to what the problem may be? The transmission was partially rebuilt about a year and half ago (blew the front pump). I have recently been having an off and on small slip at about 3000rpms (second to third gear). I think the problem might be my Mass Airflow sensor. I cleaned the MAS recently (after reading a posting about it) and that seemed to fix the problem, until today that is. The transmission has always felt strong, and took workloads fine, hell even the drive home tonight it sounded like a champ (a champ stuck in second gear). Could my problem be my MAS or is it more likely my transmission? Any and all help if appreciated.

the mas will not cause a tranny slip....

Then what would cause my transmission to not work in reverse and not shift out of second gear when in drive? Just checked my fluid and it is bad, blackish clear, nowhere near the red I am used to seeing. First thing is a fluid/filter change tomorrow. Wondering if my valve body may be bad?

The blackish color you are seeing is clutch material and burnt fluid. The trans has a serious issue. Could be the converter, pump, stuck valve, etc. The list goes on. If you have a warranty from the work you had done to it last time, I'd take it back. If you're going to spend money on a fluid change, I would have it flushed. That way if there is a stuck valve or something similar, you might have a chance of dislodging it. I doubt it would help but you never know. I've seen it happen here at work a few times, but it's rare. Also, a flush would get all of the old burnt fluid out of there, not just what's in the pan. Good luck...

Well the transmission place I had the work done at only warrantied the transmission for 6 months. So no luck there. I changed the filter an fluid today. No chunks of metal of anything in the bottom of the pan. When I started her up and took a small test drive she shifted into third gear and when I backed off she would not shift again. Time to start calling transmission repair shops...
