I have a 96 Explorer XLT 4X4,was on my way to work when the tranny went out.The truck jerked then no forward motion.Coasted to the side of the road and tried to put vehicle in park and could hear the gears grinding.Put the truck into 4x4 and was able to go a couple of more miles and lost everything.I have no foward or reverse gears now.Need to find out what I need to do,have to knowledge of trannies so any help would be greatly appreciated.Hit me up at Immmark21@aol.com

See if there's a Cottman Transmissions in your area. Full rebuild with all updates and 2 year warranty, around $2800. Definately not the cheapest route but I've had good luck with them.

thanx for the help will look in the yellow pages.it's a start!

Were there any symptoms before it just died??? Flashing OD light, hard shifts etc.?

nothing like that,no problems before.Just a hard jerk and went out.

I believe mine is going out :-( If you don't mind me asking how much did yours cost and who did you go to>

Ken

haven't gotten mine fixed yet,but right now I'm looking at $1300 starting, was told that there are 3 types of transmission for my truck depending on which one it is,that what the cost could be. Sorry that I couldn't be of much more help.

Unless you have the manual tranny or a 5.0....you have a 4r55e. And you should expec to pay around 2300-2800 for a rebuild.

My tranny went out on Friday and I had AAMCO look at it they are saying they'll take it out and diagnose the exact problem for $600 then another $1500 to replace the hardware inside. 1 year warranty unlimited miles.

for that $2000 I wonder if another $800 is worth the complete rebuild?

man transmissions are expensive.

Nick, I guess the tranny probs mean that wasn't you that I passed up in the mountains last night... In all the snow?

By the way Nick I hope you're not talking about the AAMCO on 355. They are the worst. Take it to Frederick motor company. You might pay a little bit more but AAMCO is nothing but rip off artists. If you choose not to have you truck fixed there they will still chare you the $800+ for telling you what's wrong with it. And if you don't pay they will keep your truck and sell it themselves. They don't do bad work but for the price get it fixed by someone you know will stand behind their work....FORD

mine is defiantely going oaut od lights been flashing for around 3 months or so. The other day we parked in the carport(our driveway is very steep and makes a s curve and if you don't make the curve your hanging off my driveway in air )about 15 feet dropoff. Anyways back to the comment we had parked got out and was at the door when our beloved ford started down the driveway, i ran opened the door boyfriend got in and stopped it right before going off, so i'm pretty sure thats a clue losing tranny along with the other tons of clues, so my question to everyone is can a 4rr4e be taken out and a manuel put in , or even a newer year tranny like the 5rr5e? Can this be done.????Thanks

made mistake

Sorry the tranny in it now is the 4r55e.
