ok some of you might know i just got my explorer back from a tranny rebuild any ways when i was taking a couple sharp turns it sounded like the brakes where real bad. well when i was pulling in my driveway i could here the front in snapping real bad. this is what happenend about a year ago when it locked in 4wd. (my little sister was riding with me and hit the 4wd swtich thinking it was the air, thankfully we where at a red light) any ways i had to take it to a shop for them to unlock it, i tried turning the knob and its still locked it? my question is, what can i do? lol, i mean like i said i tried turning the knob (its in the 2wd postion) still nothing????

ok this happenend about a year ago too and i had to pay some one to fix it. my 4wd is locked up. for example i can hear it popping real loud and grinding when i take sharp turns. i have turned the knob in all directions (in 2wd now) how can i fix this? and make it not happen again? im affraid to turn it back in 4wd in the future, cause i think it will happen again.

sounds like a bad speed sensor, or possibly a dirty speed sensor, are the 4 hi/low lights blinking?

Did this happen on way home from trans shop? If so, they may not have hooked up all the electrical connectors to transfer case and shift motor is not operating. Have someone turn the 4WD knob from 2WD to 4WD and back again while you listen under middle of vehicle. You should be able to hear the transfer case shift motor run. If shift motor doesn't operate, check the electrical connectors to transfer case to be sure they are fully connected. If connectors okay, check for blown fuse.

First, by '2wd' I assume you ment 'auto'. The 98 model year had no 2wd selection on the dash.

Second, we have to narrow it down to being a mechanical issue with the transfer case or an electrical gremlin with the Control Trac system. So, first, make a tight turn or two to verify the problem is present. next, crawl underneath it and unplug the connector that runs into the transfer case. This will cause the 4x4 lights to start blinking, but disregard them. Then, try to duplicate the problem again.

If unplugging the case makes the problem disappear, we have an electrical problem to hunt down. If the problem persists with the t-case unplugged, we're dealing with a mechanical failure of the t-case.

Check it out and let us know what you find. :)

dynamite, no there not. fraxin, yes on the way home, i will just let them check it out becuase i have to bring it in in 2 weeks to keep the warranty valid.

first, lol yeah i meant auto, my main knob is missing and i havent seen it in about a year so i forgot what it reads, i have to use channel locks lol, any ways im gonna take it back down to the tranny shop in two weeks to keep my warranty valid and ill let them check it out, because it didnt do this before i took it there.

hehe sounds like your channel lock technique may have destroyed the AUTO/4HI/4LO rotary switch.

[Ive merged your two threads together since they are revolving around the same problem]

ok thanks, no i've never used 4wd since i lost the knob so i dont think thats it, also like i said this started after i got it of the shop

Well in the event that you can't find another rotary knob thing, I'm not using mine anymore since Ive switched to a manual transfer case so just pay for shipping and its yours.

sid23man - It's your vehicle but if it is locked in 4WD, probably not a good idea to drive it for 2 more weeks before taking back to trans shop. Driving in 4WD on dry pavement is not good for drive train and you could cause other damage. Lot of stress and strain when none of the tires can slip.

ok izwack how much would that be? fraxin. its in my carport right now havent drove it since im driving my dodge instead im just waiting until the day i take it back to the shop
