I've tried to come up with a solution to this puzzle, but I can't.

Is there any way I can hook up my MTX RT2120 amp (Just had it taken out of my old Taurus) to the factory stereo in a 99 Explorer XLT?

Being the Explorer stereo is powerful enough (Premium), I was going to use it just to power a 10" 200W subwoofer out of the trunk.

Could someone list the items I'd need if any and instructions or diagram of how to do it? The amp was originally hooked up with RCA's from a JVC aftermarket headunit, but that won't be the case w/ the Explorer stock unit. I can't figure out where I'd be pulling the signal in from.

Thanks

Does that amp have speaker level inputs. If it does you will get signal from behind the radio. If it does not you will need a converter to hhok it up.

More Info

After inspecting the amp, it has "High-Level" inputs (I assume speaker level) and it shows a diagram for splicing into the rear speakers.

I want to use the factory head unit, speakers, and just use the amp bridged at 200W to run an amp.

Something like [head unit]

| | | - - - -Front1

| -------------Rear1
-------|-------Rear2

| ------SUB1

That was the gist of the MTX diagram.

Yup, you should be fine to just splice into the factory wiring...Im not sure where a good spot to grab the signals is, but it should be fairly easy...Good Luck

I have my amp/sub running off a stock speaker wire splice. I did this when I still have my stock HU, but then swapped head units, but kept it this way. Works really well. Anyway, the amp gets its signal from both rear speaker leads. The splice is done behind the passenger kickpanel, where all the speaker lines run through a harness. I don't have my diagram book right now, but once I get it back I can tell you which colored wires. One way to tell is to get a voltmeter, run your radio, and play with the settings to isolate certain speakers. Then test the voltages in the wires and you should be able to find the correct wires.

Did that make any sense? I'm tired.

This is quite an old thread but i was doin some searching and had another question similar to this. I'm getting a sub and amp soon and was wondering the best way to wire it into my stock system for the time being until i have enough money to do the HU and speakers. I have the audiophile system from a 98 (with the sub in back and the rear/steering wheel controls and all that).

Would i be better to try and tap into the sub input wires before the sub amp in the rear for a low level input or just disconnect the factory sub and tap into the rear speaker wires for a high-level input??
