Need Major Help

So I noticed that something is wrong with my transmission the other day, I was driving and it started to sputter really bad like it wasnt getting gas and I could hold it to the floor and it wasnt doing nothing. It would finally go and has quit since then but today I was driving and stomped down on it and when it goes into passing gear it goes to about 3 grand and then does nothing, dosnt gain speed or anything and I could hear something grinding real bad so I need help to what it may be, thanks in advance, this is the only car I have a drive a far distance to school and dont want to break down on the way there

I think you're hosed man. It sounds like your transmission has moved on to a happier place.

Well it still drives fine and everything just when I go to put it in passing gear and I just drove around a second ago and didnt do it at all. Someone told me that I should drive it in second and then stomp down and see if it would go to first and it wouldnt so idk what that means but could it be anything else
