I have searched everywhere but can't figure out how to get the rear caliper off of my 04 explorer sport 4x4. Rear disk.

Everyone discusses how hard the rotor is to remove as if the caliper just lifts off. Maybe Im crazy or missing something. I removed the 2 10mm caliper bolts but the brake pads withing the caliper is wedged between two large metal pieces that appear to be part of the whole rear assembly. I really looks like there is no way to remove the caliper and brake.

I know I must be missing something. I certainly missed the calculation of putting the vechicle on the stands as I just barely cannot close the garage door tonight until I get this thing fixed.

If anyone can help tonight that would be great.

Thanks,

Chris.

I just went through this last weekend. Once the caliper bolts are removed the caliper come out bottom first. Use a pry bar or large screwdriver to pry the bottom of the caliper toward the rear bumper. If the rotor is worn and has a lip or ridges in it this makes it harder. If this is the case you will have to try to push the piston back into the caliper bore somehow. I was able to catch a large c clamp on the inboard brake pad and compress the piston just enough to get the caliper off with a pry bar. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I still couldnt get the edges of the pads away from the wheel assembly. The rears are still pretty good so I put it back together and will likely have someone do the rears later.

Once again thanks though,

Chris.
