NEED to know pronto please! awd vs 4x4???

We have a 96 AWD and we can buy a 98 4 wd tranny. I know they are the same 4r70w trans. but I assume the transfer cases are different, at least the activation process of the transfer case. Can we take the 4wd transfer case off and just slip our awd transfer case back on? Is is that simple?

Need to know asap so we can go buy it.

Im pretty sure that the 4wd trans is not a 4R70W. The 4R70W came on the 5.0 with the awd transfercase, and the 4wd trans is a 5R55E that came with the 4.0. But to also answer your question, you cannot interchange the two transmissions and transfer cases

5.0 V8/4r70w uses the AWD BW44-04. There is a possible BW44-06 Manual t-case swap out of a 5.0 F-150.

4.0/4R55E and 5R55E use the 4x4 BW44-05 Control Trac t-case.

The tcase from a 5r55e will not fit a 4r70w and visa versa.

I am guessing here that you have a V8 AWD Explorer? In that case the tranny you need is a 4r70w with the 4wd extension housing.

Bingo!! He had the correct tranny. He just assumed since it had a transfer case it was a 4X4. It was the correct 4R70W trans. Thanks for the help guys!!
