I'm gonna need some new pads soon for my 99 XLT and was wondering if it was worth buying some aftermarket pads instead of oem ford. Also, is it true that to put new pads on they need to be machine balanced to ensure proper fit? Thanks in advance.

No, but you should get your rotors turned while you're going through all that work. That way you can make sure they're in good shape and will deliver the best performance with your new pads. The turning shouldn't cost you more then $10 a rotor.

What kind of aftermarket pads were you thinking about? I know Wagner and Bendix makes nice aftermarket ones for around $45 a pair for the front/back of 2nd gen trucks.
