I picked up a '93 Navajo (auto) last year sometime for $1000 with 185k miles on it. I know
, it's a lot for me, but I just needed a cheap second car that could carry some stuff also. The engine runs perfectly now though, and once I fix these couple problems it will actually be pretty nice still. I need to fix these couple things first though.
The first is the transmission. The 1-2 shift is starting to slip, and the 2-3 shift slips pretty badly already. I've been driving it with it for a few thousand miles now, just letting off the gas through the shift, and so far it hasn't gotten a whole lot worse. I would like to get it fixed though. Would the best/cheapest way to fix that be? I know there is a place that is about an hour away that said they have a tranny in an explorer they could pull out for me for $200, but I don't know exactly what kind of place it is. I think it's just basically a junkyard. Would there be a problem getting one from there?
The other is the brakes. I would like to get them fixed before winter because it wasn't fun driving them on snow last winter like this... One thing that is weird is that as you push down on the brake pedal, it brakes softly until a certain point and then it starts braking really hard really fast after that. I don't know why that is. Another thing is, the rear brakes seem to brake much too hard compared to the front, because they lock up way before the front. That is the other part of the problem. The ABS doesn't work. There is no ABS light on of any kind either. I took it to a shop and they did some sort of brake diagnostic on it and he told me it was because I had warped/cracked rotors on the back. So I replaced the entire rear brakes system with new stuff from Advance Auto, but nothing really changed. The only thing that got better was it stopped surging quite so much when stopping.
Thanks for all the help guys
