2001 Mountaineer
Hello all! This is chrisH!. I own a 2001 Mercury Moutaineer, love the truck. I bought it used 4years ago and she had been a good daily driver to me. I am restoring a 68 Firebird and a 83 CJ7 currently. I also own a 96 Mustang GT( the wife drives that one). I posted the following question concerning the Mountaineer, any help would be appreciatted, money is tight this time of year. Thanks, Chris

My truck just hit 95K miles. Two days ago it started squeeking in the front drivers side. It has rapidly gotten worse, while turning the wheel (either moving or stopped), most bumps etc. I lifted it up, pulled the wheels and jiggled everything. All the ball joints seem good, but there is a little upward movement in the lowers (both sides, but no metallic clunks while driving). As I turn the spindles by hand I hear a squeek from both upper ball joints, sounds like rubber squeeking. I also hear a slight squeek in the steering rack as it approaches the locks. I know about the sway bar squeeks, have been spraying silicone on them for years, so I did that but it did not help this time. It seems wierd that both sides have the same noises at the same time and just out of the blue, the truck has never been used to plow or off road, I actually baby it. Is this noise a tell tale sign of upper ball joint wear even though they seem tight? I am also curious about the cost since the Haynes manual says you have to replace the whole control arm. Any estimate on cost of both upper and lower control arm replacement?? I have replaced ball joints and control arms before but never on a torsion bar suspension. any help would be greatly apreciatted, Chris :salute::salute::salute:

welcome chris

Welcome to this forum! You could tell if the ball joints are loose if you jack the wheel off of the ground, and wiggle the wheel. It should be firm. How is your alignment? Bad tie rod ends along with bad ball joints make popping noises, and make the steering feel uneasy.

i have replaced the passenger upper control arm on my 95 xlt and it is a fairly easy job i recomend to follow the chilton repair manual on that but as far as the lower control arm i havent done that yet i am actually getting ready to to that my self this week. i have heard you can just do the ball joint and have seen some pics for the passanger side on this site by googling it. but for the passenger side it is just pulling 4-5 bolts and putting them back. the upper control arm passanger and driver run around $78 and the lower control arm on the driver side is $115 or so depending on the brand. but if it is just the ball joint you want is just about $25.
