hey guys! new to the forum. my girlfriend just bought a 98 X, 4.0 ohc 4wd. its got 422k miles on it! 1 owner, drove it back and fourth to texas couple times a month when she had it. i dont know whats been replaced, but it appears to be either the original engine, or a JY engine. but man it sure is clean! looks factory on the frame and suspension compenents. anyway, the CEL is on, P0743. still goes in and out of OD fine, shifts fine, dosent miss a beat. research has told me its the torque converter clutch solenoid.

questions: where is it? some people say its on the valvebody, some say its on the side of the trans? can never find a straight answer.

second, how do i identify what trans is in it?

third, where can i get one? called all the local autoparts stores and noone has one. punk at autozone even had the balls to tell me torque converters dont lock. but rockauto dosent have one. is it a dealer only thing?

thanks in advance guys! and by the way, i love the fourm. the stickys are actually helpful! already figured out the radio problem and where to find the door lock keypad code!

The trans in your ex is a 5r55e. There is a code on the driver door tag that will tell you this. The TCC Solenoid is located on the valve body of the trans.

SOLENOIDS

Solenoids..... 6 of em. 4 on one side and 2 on the other, all held in place by some reasonbly flimsy brackets... here the the ones on the 4 side.... a TCC on the far left (very similar to the A4LD setup, wait and see) 2 shift solenoids (of which there are 4 all the same and interchangeable 2 on this side and 2 on the other) and the big Daddy of them all, the EPC solenoid (far right).... capable of producing varying pressures by computer command! (oh baby). This is one that the experts all recommend you replace while you are in there, it is a fast wearing part due to what it does..
