93,96 Aerostar
Gentlemen,I have a(4.0) 96 Aerostar with 365,000 miles. I recently added a rust free 93 with "only" 195,000 miles to the fleet thinking I might need a spare sometime. The new(4.0) 93 has a problem. As I am traveling at a normal speed down the interstate the speedometer jumps to 90mph! and may stay there for a short time or many minutes. It might be fine for weeks then do it again:when this happens the odometer becomes unreadable. It seems to happening with an increased frequency in the last few days.I find this disconcerting to say the least.Any ideas? Thankyou in advance. Aerothusiast

Thanks for your reply. My 96 Aerostar I bought in 2003 for $2800,when it had 148,000 miles and I drove it(mostly for work) all over.tn,ia,mn,sd,wyoming,canada,michigan,ohio,ky,wv,va,nc,mo.I put almost 220,000 miles on it and the only time I had to have it worked on by a shop was when the thermostat stuck one time and I had to be towed in near my home.(plus one or two wheel alignments)Everything else was done by me or my mechanic friend at his house, mostly front end work that I needed help with. The motor nor the transmission has ever been apart.I put Amsoil synthetic in the rearend when I got it and never touched it since,no howl.brakes and front end parts are what I did most of,and you get what you pay for with balljoints.Moog are much better than the cheap ones.I changed the water pump and some idlers, belts and hoses and had the alt rebuilt by a picky alternator rebuilder soon after I got it to avoid problems down the road.I did develop an intake gasket leak this summer, which I patched up temporarily, that's when I decided to purchase the backup van the "new" 93 as I had nothing else to drive. The 96 has been very good to me.22mpg hwy, 18 pulling an open trailer with three Bultaco dirt bikes.(o: Aerothusiast

Welcome to this forum! I've never seen an Aerostar with so many miles. Could you post some pictures when you have time? As for the speedometer issue, the speed sensor is probably shot by now, but is easy to test & replace. You're very lucky to have the same engine & transmission after all of this time. The gas mileage is also pretty good considering the age & wear on the drivetrain components.
