2001 Ford Explorer XLT
Just purchased a 2001 Explorer to pull my boat and maybe camp out with it. I have a little grinding noise from the front area and a local shop says it is caused by the front drive shaft of my AWD. They say that I have to purchase a complete drive shaft. I was wondering if it is possible to replace or rebuild the U joint instead of replaceing the whole drive shaft. It is a XLT with the 5.0 engine. Thank you for any help.

Of course it is possible, I'd steer clear of that shop in the future.

Welcome to the forum. I moved your thread to the 2nd Gen section.

Thank you and I will stay clear of the shop.

DORMAN Part # 932201

Thanks for the part number. I replaced it along with the front U joint. I still have a "grinding" noise when I just start moving either forward or reverse. I've replaced the upper control arms and ball joints, lower ball joints, one front wheel assembly and the front brakes. I can't see what else could be causing the grinding noise. It doesn't do it when I'm driving regular, just when I back up or go slow forward. Any suggestions? Thank you.
