I have a 2015 explorer sport with 71k miles and it started to make noises in the front end about one month ago. Brought it to my repair shop who pulled up the Technical Service Bulletin that said that this is a common issue and listed one hour labor and the following parts:

Washer, Thrust
nut, Wheel hub
Nut, Sway bar link
Nut, Sway bar link
Nut, tie rod end
Bolt, dynamic suspension

Unfortunately, this is beyond my warranty and therefore not covered.. How much should I expect this to cost and is it necessary to bring to the dealer?

Since you are no longer under a warranty, you can take your vehicle where-ever you want. Note that Ford has a 24 month warranty on genuine Ford parts and labour. You could always as the dealer for a quote.

Roger dat. Thanks for the update.

They diagnosed your front sway bar end links as need replacement.

That is very easy job if you have basic socket/wrench set.

Here you go:

Thank you for your reply! I brought the vehicle (2015 explorer sport edition 72k miles) in for repair at my dealer who stated that they could not hear or reproduce the noise but said the noise is coming from the center of the vehicle and they put it up on the lift and found PTU leaking. They put it on the lift and verified that the noise was internal to PTU. Quoted me roughly 2700.00 for the job.
I told them I wanted to think it over and noticed that my powertrain warranty was 5 yr/60k miles....Needless to say I will contact FORD customer service. After all I had brought this care in for this noise a couple months ago (not sure how many miles ago) to my local mechanic and he was unable to pinpoint the noise but advised me to bring it in to the dealer. My question of the day is since it is just out of warranty by a few months and 12k miles, what are the chances that they will help me? I am not prepared at this point to shell out close to 3000.00 for something (especially in these unstable financial times) that should last longer than 60k miles? Any suggestions on who to direct my correspondence with?

Thanks

E

Well, no chance that they'll cover a repair out of warranty, but you could ask your mechanic to quote the replacement and get you a used one from a junk yard (low mile and WITH a drain plug). Should be a fraction of the price.

I also don't think you will get much help but if you don't ask you wouldn't know. There is a number in the Owner's Manual. I'm not sure if that is the same one that has been posted in this Forum a few times. Good luck.

Thanks for your response, that is very helpful....are replacements reliable? Being a healthcare provider I am hoping that FORD or my dealership may pay it forward to help me out while I am waiting for my small practice PPP loan so that I can continue to provide care and pay my staff. #waitingformyownpaycheck

Thanks, much appreciated!

Typically the PTU fails big time so what exactly is the noise you are hearing? Most PTU issues include wheels dragging, case cracked open, leaking, etc.. The PTU is located directly under the driver-side area so I assume you would be hearing noise anytime the wheels are moving if it is indeed bad.

I recommend getting a floor jack and some jack stands at (probably less than $100 for all) and get the front tires up in the air and checking it out if you are not scared to use tools.

I really appreciate your response. I only hear the noise when the vehicle is moving slow such as backing out / pulling into parking space/garage and while stationary and turning the wheel. It is worse when stationary. I can definitely feel it in the steering wheel as well. It is more of a noise you hear when a wheel bearing needs repair or is loose if that makes sense. I think it may be coming from under the drivers seat. I may bring it to another dealer / shop for evaluation and second opinion. Would I be better off taking it to a skilled transmission repair facility?

Dealers tend to want to cover their overhead as well as fix your car.

Thanks again
