to fill newer vehicles (explorers included) you pull a vacuum on the system through the fill port. (Remove the pressure cap), then while under vacuum let coolant fill the now empty cooling system. As close as you can get to 100% no air in the system.
When you start it up you set the heaters to max and rev the engine up to get the coolant flowing well and purge whatever air bubbles remained.
