97 Explorer xlt v6 sohc
So I bought a 97 xlt off Craigslist. V6 sohc, 170k. Working ac, radio, clean interior, body is good. Starts and drives well, and I only paid 1100. I noticed the temp gauge and fuel gauge don't work, with the fuel gauge showing overfill. I've been told that a fuel sending unit problem. Sure enough I got error code po455. Each detected large leak in evap. Probable cause missing fuel cap, canister broke, hose cracked or not connected, pure or vent solenoid defective, vacuum leak at engine. Other code is po460, electrical connection at fuel sending unit is poor. Possible cause is failed fuel level sending unit.

I bought it cause it was all I could afford and I really love how it looks and drives. I'm not really mechanically inclined so go easy on me, but is this looking like an expensive fix? What should be my first step is diagnosing both problems and the faulty gauges?

Temp guage first: could be the gauge or the sending unit on the engine. Unplug the wire from the sender on the engine and ground it to the engine; gauge should go to max. If it does, most likely sendor is bad and should be replaced.

Fuel gauge is harder; would require some more extensive testing. If it is the fuel level sender in the fuel tank, that requires dropping the tank and pulling out the fuel pump assembly. Good luck.

A common cause of the P0455 code is a worn gasket
on the fuel filler cap. A new cap is the usual fix.

RockAuto has a good selection, as does Amazon.
