Hi all,

I'm getting a new unused 4.0 litre sohc engine delivered shortly to put in my 1999 Explorer. The previous owner isn't sure what year the engine was manufactured so i was wondering how i could identify if it has the upgraded timing components of the 2002 engine or whether it is the older engine with the crappy timing parts. If i was to remove one of the valve covers what would i need to look for or will i need to look elsewhere??

Thanks

Thanks for that 2000StreetRod. That was an easy answer :) Won't know what year the engine is until i receive it in the next few days. Fingers crossed its 2002 onwards. If not i will have the decision as to whether leave it as is or swap the timing gear for the upgraded parts before installing the engine, mmm :/

Well the engine arrived today. There isn't a number stamped on the back of the engine like shown in the picture on the above link. There is a ford part number sticker on the valve cover which has a date 01/19/00. Guess it has the old timing parts in it :/

Thing that concerns me is that it has 4x2 on the sticker, so i guess it is for the 2 wheel drive model and not the 4 wheel drive which my explorer is!! Will this be a problem???

That won't be a problem. It just doesn't have the balance shaft. Although there are differing opinions on this, the general concensus is that the lack of that shaft isn't an issue.

Why doesn't he 4x2 have a balance shaft?

Does the engine vibrate more because of this?

Supposedly the engineers found that there was a harmonic vibration at low speeds while in 4wd low. The same reason that some years have that big rubber damper weight on the transfer case. Many people have swapped in the 2wd version of the SOHC V6 had no issues alt all.

Is that it? Just a harmonic in 4wd Low?

So the balance shaftless engines should spool up quicker, right?

Will be interested in the reply to that. So I'm guessing you don't really need the balance shaft. Never really understood how the balance shaft worked anyway!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Thats it.That is the only reason for the balance shaft. As for the engine spooling up quicker, you would think so. But I'm not sure so I can't speak on that.

So I should have no problems installing this engine then :-/

Ooh one other thing. Do you know if there is any difference between the LHD engine and the RHD engine? My Explorer has the RHD engine and the new engine is labeled LHD!!

That's a good question. Didn't think of that. I have no idea if there are any differences between them. You might try posting in the UK section and see if anyone knows.

There's a UK section!!??!!

Wouldn't of thought there would be any difference in the actual engine. Maybe differences in the engine wiring loom perhaps as i know the loom goes to the right bulkhead on the LHD and to the left on the RHD models due to the steering column and brake master cylinder being on oppersite sides. Thats the only thing i can think of being different, unless anyone knows of anything else!

There's a bloke here who regularly imports LHD engines for use in our RHD cars and he fits them too so I'm guessing there aren't any problems with them; at least none that can't be gotten around.
