I am thinking about up-grading my stereo system again. I recently installed a Blaupunkt Alaska II head unit and I think it is great! I am getting better radio reception and the CD player is very sweet. That thing never skips, which is pretty impressive considering the vehicle and the streets I have to drive on. OK, it skipped once, but that was when I hit the mother of all potholes. I'm lucky I didn't lose a wheel after hitting that sucker.

I have a 1992 Eddie Bauer with the JBL premium sound system (minus the factory head unit).

I am not a total audiophile. I am satisfied with the factory sub. I am not interested in a power upgrade, the new head unit gives out plenty of juice for my taste. I do, however, have a pretty good ear for sound quality. I have noticed things in songs that I hadn't noticed before since I got the higher quality head unit.

Would it make sense for me to get new front speakers (I am not going to upgrade the back ones) as a quality upgrade? A speaker upgrade is pretty cheap, but would it make sense with my system? Would the aftermarket speakers be better than my JBL premium sound speakers? I have a hunch they would be, but I don't want to waste my time or money if they aren't.

Thanks.

Even if you have a stock system, upgrading speakers will be great. I added 4 Kappas to my Pioneer FH-P404 head unit. They are much clearer and can handle bass much better. However, any quality speaker will do with the Kappas do. Look for a good deal and you won't be sorry.

Speaker upgrades are always a wise move, no matter which HU you have.

Go for it..... then tell us how it sounds ( to you ).

The first thing I did to my stereo was upgrade the 4 corner speakers with Rockford Fosgate 5x7 2-ways. I was very pleased and have had them for 2 years with the stock head unit. I just put a new head unit in last week and they still rock!

Upgrading your speakers is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways of improving the SQ in your X. I recommend the pioneer 6x8 3 ways for the front, they rock for the price your pay! After upgrading the speakers, you'll REALLY enjoy the new HU!!!!

Your musical taste is a big factor in choosing a brand of speaker. Personally, I demand clarity over booming bass, so I use JBL speakers. I know many who run Rockford's and love them, but they are more concerned with bass and sheer decibels. Rockfords aren't as efficient as JBL or Pioneer, meaning that it takes more power to get them to play well as compared to JBL's or the like.
