well basically you should get a good aftermarket cd headunit. and replace the door speakers. get a good 12" subwoofer and an amp. that's the basic formula.

if you want it to sound REALLY good. go for a sony es headunit (they have 5.5 volt preamp outputs). infinity kappa 5X7s with a decent 4 channel amp. then get an Audiobahn AW1205X 12" subwoofer powered by an Audiobahn A275HCX amp. the setup will look small (with only one sub) but will probably sound much better and louder than your friends' systems.

i forgot to add that any aftermarket setup that i described in the first line of the post will sound much better than the factory system. just stay away from cheap brands like Pyle, Pyramid, Boss, Legacy, American Pro, etc... you'll do fine with Earthquake, MMATS, Infinity, Polk, Audiobahn, etc...

PS. sony es series headunits are good, but dont ever buy a sony subwoofer or speakers

thanks for your help! But does it matter if i already have a 6 disc cd changer and do i have to replace the old radio control thing i guess thats a head unit?? not sure anyway thanks!

No, it does not matter if you have a changer, just about all new head units have the controls for them. Also, it really matters how much you want to spend on a system and how good you want it to be. I agree with Leenjeen about the Audiobahn stuff, you will really like it. For a headunit you could go with a new Eclipse that has a 8 volt preouts but it is up to you. Go to a couple differant shops to find what you like and don't let one guy tell you what you want.

The ford 6 cd in console cd changer doesnt work with aftermarket headunits
(correct me if im wrong)

well, to the best of my knowledge, you are correct. but if you can find what company makes the headunit and cd changer for ford, you can still use it if you buy that brand aftermarket headunit. example: i believe sony supplied Lexus with their stereos in the early 90s. even though it didn't say sony anywhere on the equipment, a sony headunit will work with the factory cd changer.

but i dont know who supplied ford with explorer headunits, so you're better of just buying a matching aftermarket set. do not buy a FM modulated cd changer!! the sound quality is very poor.

The label on my factory changer out of my 99, actually said Clarion.

Congratulations!!!! you've just cracked the code.

if the cd changer is made by clarion, then a clarion headunit with cd changer controller will work.
that one line post was the most informative post i read in a long time. thanks

WOW! I always thought it was a JBL. Aren't I an idiot!
Sorry, I don't know much about Clarion so I am no help.

well it seems you just made leenjen happy afterall.... lol :)

if you want good stuff get alpine or eclipse head unit and some mb quart or focal speakers and a kicker amp and some subs
