I currently own a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 auto, 4.0 SOHC
Current mods: K&N air filter element, natures body-lightening (rust).
Options are pretty ho-hum, but I was quite surprised how the 4.0 kicks when your foot is down. Even with it's high milage (180,000 aprox.).
Personally not a fan of automatics, but considering my wife drives this mostly and she can't drive stick (yet, she wants a 67 Mustang fastback with a 5spd.
), I guess its alright for now. Its currently developed a finicky issue with shifting as, it doesn't like OD. It might kick in (at some of the strangest of times), and then the O/D OFF light will flash when it doesn't feel like working. Typically not a problem but we usually commute on the highway at 65+ and it really kills the mpgs without the overdrive working.
After some searching I have come to the conclusion that the automatic transmission control solenoid is going. Which I suppose isn't all that bad since I need to drop the pan and filter anyway to change the fluid (good chance that's still OE from the factory. We got this free from her parents).
Looking to repair the rust and give it a repaint (or at least the lowers where the rust is). But for now the transmission needs my attention. Hope that goes ok.
