HEY GUYS - I NEED OPINIONS!

2003 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L V6 FLEX
5 Speed Automatic

So, my transmission finally gave out on my 03 Ford Explorer with 243k miles on it. I talked to my mechanic (totally honest guy that I trust). He ran the numbers and basically I'm looking at roughly between $1,500 for a used transmission (minimal warranty) or $2,500 (full 3 year parts/labor warranty) for a completely rebuilt transmission installed.

So I asked him how long do these motors last, because that's my only other real concern. This particular motor is running awesome. He says he's seen them go bad at 150k and he's seen some running great at 400k... you just never know.

I've only got $1,600 into the vehicle total, and I've already gotten 4 years use out of it. It has a few minor issues like the cruise control doesn't work, the door locking mechanism says the door is ajar, but those things are rather common on these Explorers and can be fixed for you know a couple hundred bucks tops from what I understand.

So is there anyone out there that's a mechanic, or a Ford specialist or has some insight on what I might be dealing with cost-wise for other things down the road. Because aside from those few minor things, it's got minimal rust and runs great with the exception of the now pretty much shot transmission. AC blows cold, etc...

I bought it at 212,000 miles for $1,600 cash off the lot and I'm at 243,000 miles now...

Or do I just scrap it? And honestly I hate that idea...

Any idea's would be appreciated!
