Hey all, Just found this site this morn. Looks like a great source of information.
The reason I'm here is, that my step son just bought a 1997 Explorer XLT 5.0 A/T with 184k. He went out with his mom to purchase a used vehicle and unfortunatley they managed to bring home the biggest POS possible,(184k, front wheel bearings so badly worn that the vehicle is not safe to be on the road and the under side badly rusted from, obviously sitting in salt water with evidence of a badly rusted tow package and also seems to be stuck in 4 wheel drive.) and got taken of, pretty much all of his income tax money(3K) that he has been waiting so patiently for. Now I understand that he is 23 years old and wanted to try to be independent by making a major purchase by himself, and I give him credit for that, but knowing very little about maintaning a vehicle or even general auto mechanics, what he got, unfortunatley was taken advantage of.Sorry to turn this intro into a short novel but I just wanted to give some backround. I have been doing my own auto repairs for some years now so I will help him in any way I can , but I am not familar with the Explorer. Looks like our first task will be to replace the very badly worn front wheel bearings and try to get this thing road worthy. I know this is the introduction section so I wont ask tecnical questions here. If some one has a link to down load a FSM, it sure would be a great place to start. Also a point in the right direction as to which forum to post tecnical questions for this second gen Explorer. Thanks in advance. Hopefully we can get Justin back on the road safely and restore some sence of pride at the same time.
Thanks again.
