My mirror fell off at about 100k miles. I too figured, "Great! No more obstructed view." But it was only about a week later that I decided you can't live without it and be safe. When backing up, the side mirrors CAN'T see directly behind your truck. That leaves you with an enormous blind spot right where your about to put 4000 pounds of Detroit steel. I had a lot of kids in my neighborhood at that time and I just knew there'd be a tricycle back there that I couldn't see, or worse, a three-year-old ON that tricycle.

Anyway, I tried the the autozone mirror kit a couple of times, but neither lasted more than a year. So, I tried super glue. The super glue lasted a bit longer, but eventually fell off. Then the lightbulb went off. "DUH. Glass is smooth. Glue can only grab onto something that has some grip to it."

The kits come with a chemical that is supposed to etch the glass, but it doesn't work. What I finally did was pick the spot I wanted (I did move it up 2"), and put 2 or 3 deep scratchs in the class with a sharp metal tool. Then I superglued it. It's held ever since (even through some rediculously rough four wheeling).

Thanks for the Tip. It will come in handy I'm sure. When my mirror fell off my Jeep the kits would not hold and I just gave up on it and never put it back on.

that's a good idea. but i have a detachable rearview for when i'm listening to music. i only put it on when i need it.

I dont think you really needed to etch the glass. Mine has been on for a few months and it seems to be holding pretty damn solid. What I did was cleaned off the glass, bought a new button (the other one fell down the vent), took sandpaper to that button and then put a few big scratches in the button with a nail. Then superglued it on.. it holds pretty darn good.

Okay, I have to ask,.......why do you detach your mirror to listen to music???????

I think he removes it because it vibrates. Mine used to do it many years ago too when I listened to music that loud. I never bothered to remove it though.

the vibration doesnt bother me. but if i dont take it off before the music gets too it, it will break off the windshield and it's really a pita to get it back on. so now i just slide it off when i dont need it. then that little metal post stays on there. to put it back, i just slide it on.
