My mirror fell off at about 100k miles. I too figured, "Great! No more obstructed view." But it was only about a week later that I decided you can't live without it and be safe. When backing up, the side mirrors CAN'T see directly behind your truck. That leaves you with an enormous blind spot right where your about to put 4000 pounds of Detroit steel. I had a lot of kids in my neighborhood at that time and I just knew there'd be a tricycle back there that I couldn't see, or worse, a three-year-old ON that tricycle.
Anyway, I tried the the autozone mirror kit a couple of times, but neither lasted more than a year. So, I tried super glue. The super glue lasted a bit longer, but eventually fell off. Then the lightbulb went off. "DUH. Glass is smooth. Glue can only grab onto something that has some grip to it."
The kits come with a chemical that is supposed to etch the glass, but it doesn't work. What I finally did was pick the spot I wanted (I did move it up 2"), and put 2 or 3 deep scratchs in the class with a sharp metal tool. Then I superglued it. It's held ever since (even through some rediculously rough four wheeling).
