The spedometer in my '91 explorer has stopped working, it's constantly pegged, for the last couple of years it would occasionally go crazy, but now it is always pegged. I was wondering if there was anything i could do to fix it, or if i needed to take it in. My mom refuses to let my drive it until it's fixed, thanks for the help.

I believe the first gens are speed cable/gear driven for your speedometer. I would take it in - unless there is someone here will help you out with it who has a 1st gen and knows where exactly the cable is.

Cable is driven by the VSS which is mounted on the t-case right next to the rear drive shaft at about the 10 o'clock position.

My 92 had the speedo quit like that----but I also lost overdrive. This was the VSS mentioned. I posted about it awhile back if you want to search. The part is about 45 bucks canadian and say an hours labour tops--if This is your problem.

My '92 was doing the same thing until I pulled the speedo head out, blew the dust out of it, and pulled the cable out and greased it. Did this about a year ago, and its only acted up once, but not for very long.
