1997 explorer xlt 4x4
I posted previously of what I thought was transmission problems. After further diagnosis figured out it was the transfer case. Put in a transfer case from a 99 explorer xlt into my 97. The problem I'm having now is that I don't have a speedometer. I noticed on the old transfer case I had a plugged that was inserted just outside the hoookup for the rear drive shaft. Is this the speedsensor? I looked in the Haynes manual and it seems to be but just wasn't sure. If so the new transfer case doesn't have this. What can I do to fix the problem? Thx in advance.

In 1998 the speed sensor moved to the rear axle housing. I hate to say it but you maybe SOL. Hopefully not. I don't know if there is anywhere else to pick the signal up from or not.

Thx Dan. I didn't want to hear that but appreciate the response. lol. If anyone has any info on possibly picking up the signal somewhere else would be appreciated.
Mel.

I'm hoping there is a simple fix for you. I miss the old days when things were so much simpler. Just about any C4 or C6 would work in multiple cars. Not these days though:(

Please stop telling people that. It's NOT what happened. The Vehicle Speed Sensor on the transfer case/transmission output was eliminated (not moved) for '98. Instead, the ABS control module interprets the vehicle speed from the THREE ABS sensors (not just the rear axle speed sensor) and outputs a Vehicle Speed Signal to the components that need it (including the GEM, Speedo, cruise control, stereo, PCM, ECU, et. al.). The sensor was not moved from one position to another.

You *may* be able to replace the rear half of the transfer case housing from your 97 onto the 99, including some of the internal components that use the drive gear and sensor for it. You may also be able to modify the current case's internals per another thread in this forum (can't find it right now, but someone else is in the same situation). Unfortunately the only case that'll be a direct plug-n-play bolt-in for a 97 is another 97.

Well excuse me. A FORD DEALER parts guy told me just last week that it WAS MOVED to the rear axle.

Sorry... didn't mean to jump down your throat about it, but I know I've corrected you on that point a couple of times in the last week or so... Just trying to prevent the spread of incorrect information.

It was definitely not moved, despite what some parts counter dealership employee may have told you (because, you know, they're NEVER wrong...) That rear axle speed sensor is present on both the 95-97s and the 98-01s (and IIRC, is the same part number). It's one of three sensors used by the ABS Control module (there's one at each front wheel as well). It was definitely not moved from one point on the vehicle to another, and if the parts guy told you otherwise, he is, in fact, mistaken. If he looks at his parts manual, he'll find that the VSS on the transfer case was eliminated in '98, and the rear axle speed sensor is present on both of them. If he has access to the electrical schematics, it's clear that the vehicle speed signal originates from and is fed back to the PCM on the 95-97 models, and the vehicle speed signal on the 98-01 originates solely from the ABS Control module.

Melhars9 is the first person I told that. That's why I was upset. You must have me confused with someone else.

Again, my apologies... My bad. I blame post-vacation brain atrophy. :) (the alcohol may have killed those brain cells...)

Mine to you and to Melhars for jacking his thread.
