Anyone have any ideas on a ready made kit to turbo the 4.0 OHV? Im not against superchargers, I just know tubbochargers deliver more power more efficiently, and turbo lag is a thing of the past. So howbout it anyone know anything? Maybe somone working on a future project, don't be stingy share your info.

Anything is poosible

I can get anything you want done as long as you can bring me the car and you have a big enough check book. Remember goning fast costs alot to do it the right way.

Hey Troll,
Good to see you around! Any chance of coming to Inverness in june? (no - you don't have to take your truck in the mud ;))

As far as the turbo goes - listen to Troll - this guy and Quadcam know their stuff when it comes to power. And he's right - it's gonna cost some big bucks to go twin turbos. You're gonna need custom heads (there really aren't any aftermarket heads for the 4.0 ohv), ci\ustom intake and exhaust manifolds and so on. Gonna be a heck of a lot cheaper to put on a blower, new cam, port and polish, and valve job...

troll, whats the biggest power boost on that explorer? i got borla and K&N and i want to know what i should do next

First: There are no off the shelf turbo kits for the 4.0
Second: When you send Troll your check, leave room for lots of 0s
Third: Turbo lag is alive and well.

Lag is simply the time it takes for a turbo to spool up. Smaller turbos spool fast but don’t offer high-end power. Large turbos have longer lag times but produce big HP. Superchargers are perfect for someone who wants added torque across a grater RPM range. Turbos have the advantage of being more durable then a supercharger. If you want power across the board, get a supercharger.

I have been working on a turbocharged 4.0 for over a year (thanks to my brother in law’s procrastination) and I’ll tell you what I have learned so far:

1) It is always much more expensive then you think
2) It is always much more complicated then you think
3) It will always take longer then you think
4) The first three rules are gross understatements.

A complete supercharger system for the 4.0 is about $3,000.
Turbo - $1,700 to $4,000 each
Custom exhaust manifold - $500 - $1,000
Intercooler - $1,000 to $2,000
Electronics - $600 to $1,200
Misc. - $1000 – up

Unless you have access to a pro shop, have huge bucks or are otherwise a mechanical god, you’re asking for a boatload of headaches.

Contrary to how this sounds, I’m not trying to detour you. I’m only trying to press upon you the complexity of this project your contemplating. One year ago I didn’t know jack about turbochargers. Today, after reading over a dozen books and talking to more pros then I can remember, I consider myself a well-educated amateur.

I recommend, if your serious about wanting to build a turbocharger system for your 4.0, read “Maximum Boost” by Corky Bell. This is a good start.

Just my 2 cents

The cheapest way to make power is NOS and the way I like the best is supercharger but if you do not want to go that far there are a bunch of bolt on for your type of motor. By the way what motor are we talking about on your truck jas84? If I know what you have I can give you an educated answer.

I might be interrested in an NOS kit for my 99 Limited 4.0 SOHC:p
How long is a bottle good for ?.... How big of a HP setup would be reccommended for a newer vehicle? Anyone else just add a NOS kit and what did you think? A supercharger is way too expensive right now.

Nitrous is great. Not very expensive, lots of power, BUT, be aware that NOS only works at WOT (wide open throttle). For racing, track or street, it's great. I just think for most people though, especially us with big ol' Explorers, they would be happier with a supercharger or turbo, which give HP increases BEFORE WOT.

Now if you like to race around with your foot on the floor quite often, then by all means, bolt on a bottle of giggle juice. The HP increases are quite impressive. But be careful. Too much NOS can easily make your motor go BOOM!

If NOS is your choice, make sure you have a pro who knows what he's doing design and install your system.

Troll,
Jason is running the 4.0 OHV motor. Not many options there. I liked what we talked about - using the Vortech SC because you can change the wheel to get more than the 5-6psi boost. Maybe someday - or maybe I'll build the 347 stroker with twin turbos - or maybe I'll wake up! :D

Jon

BTW - Bill (Troll) can you make it to Inverness in June??

Venom has a programmable NOS system that uses throttle position and RPMs to inject a pre determined percentage of nitro into the motor. This gives a turbo like feel. Sells for about $1200.

The programmable NOS system sounds cool. Who makes it? Does it vary the volume of spray with RPM and TP? Any idea on the reliability of the system? Know any links to the manufacturer? Thanks.

i have them posted on my web site the nos 5115 kit which is the same as on my truck. the most bang for your buck

The programmable system is made by Venom Performance. The VCN-2000 is not cheap, about $1,300. But the nice thing about this system verses other, les expensive systems is that you can, via our computer, preset the way that nitro is introduced to the motor. There are three modes you can choose:

Drag mode: In this mode the VCN-2000 operates like all other systems. Activation and nitrous injection are all achieved at once. Through programming the activation at a desired throttle percentage for instance 65% throttle angle and the amount of nitrous say 45% ( 95 hp ). Once the TPS has sensed 65% throttle angle the unit activates patent pending solenoid allowing the injection of nitrous.

Linear Mode: In this mode the user programs at what throttle angle should be the starting point for induction of nitrous. The central control module then adds a proportionate amount of nitrous in relation to throttle angle. The higher the throttle angle the greater the flow, up to a maximum amount programmed by you. This is expected to be the most popular mode.

Timed mode: In this mode the user programs at what throttle angle the nitrous should be introduced and at how much nitrous should be added ( in terms of % ) . The user also enter an injection time ( How long to inject nitrous for ). This is ideal when working with tubocharging to help eliminate spool lag.
