Hey fellas I have a quick question.

The fan which blows the air into the cabin of my Explorer is noisey. Like *really* noisey. But it only makes the noise if its on a setting lower than the highest setting.

On an of the other settings, it still blows the air fine just with a gawd awful sound that appears to be just the fan needing a bit of grease. (its fairly dusty here in the warmer months)

How can i go about injectin that sucker with some WD-40 or some other lubricating substance? Which is the easiest way to get at it?

I can't find anything in the archives concerning this.

Thanks,

Leo

I want to know this too, because my Taurus is doing this! It seems to be in the blower, but it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side

its definitely the fan, i'm 100% positive. The reason being is because sometimes if you have it on a lower setting for blowing air, the fan isn't making the noise as much, hit a bump and boom it starts wailing again.

but if its on full blast she doesn't make the sound, because its spinning at its max rpm. when i shut off the vehicle you can then hear the fan wind down.

there has to be a way to poke the spray nozzle of a can of lubricant in there to get this. if i knew how to get to it i can figure it out from there :)

gunna start readin the Hayne's tonight, i never had it with me last night or today. I was just hopin someone had fixed this type of problem :)

The bearings are going out of the blower motor mine is doing the same thing if I turn it off and on three or four times it stops, but eventually it will burn up the motor:(

I think a heater motor is only about 30 bucks at autozone, pretty easy to change, its on the passengers side firewall:D

Looks like the bearings of the fan motor are gone, or badly dirty.
Otherwise, the fan motor has a air cooling system, is a rubber hose that goes from the fan housing to the rear part of the fan motor, in order to send an air stream to the motor body to cool it when is working.
Maybe in your Ex that hose is disconnected and the overheat damages the bearings. Check it out.

Good Luck!;)

Had replace mine ...

a few years ago due to a noticable clatter that would not go away. It cost about $20 or so and was not that hard to do. It's on the passenger side firewall...right in the corner. Just had to remove the air filter and duct in order to remove and replace it...it's right there. Took about an hour or less.

well, i took it out last night to "grease" and well...it don't sqeak anymore but it only turns on if you put the fan to high speed. hahah

oh well it was worth a shot :) lloks like i'll be replacng the whole motor :)
