Noisy transfer case and a blinking overdrive off light

Hey folks, my name is Jim and I am new to the forum. I have a 1997 explorer 4wd that when shifted into 4 wheel low makes a crazy noise (like a very low rumble) Should I be looking at the transfer case motor first? Also when I was on a long trip recently, while on the hightway the overdirve off light came on and was flashing. After I shut the car off overnight the overdrive light was not on, but after several hours on the road, there it was again. It has done this periodically. The fluids in the transmission are fine. The truck has 158K on it has not be used for fourwheeling or driven hard. I bought it new it 97 and thought I had been taking good care if it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you might have a bad solenoid going on with the transmission or a sensor. Your best bet would be to bring it to someone to see if they can read the code the transmission is throwing and then go from there.

Thanks Jeremy, I've been told band trans, bad transfer case etc... but the codes indicate nothing. The trans seems to be ok. Do you think that it could be just an abberant light. I really don't want to spend a lot of bucks chasing a ghost. Have you seen this before. Thanks... Jim

When was the last time the trans was serviced and how often is it serviced? What fluid is used? As stated, it is possible one of the shift solenoids is malfunctioning...

Hey guys, Tony, SVT and erupe. Thanks for the welcome as late as this might be. Spent a few months in the hospital and have (not had ability to get to the forum. Have changed the trans fluid and filter, flushed trans, and changed fluid in transfer case. Transfer case is now quieter but overdrive not disengage with the button and now no light at all (not flashing) Any suggestions?
