Been having a problem with cranking the 2003 Ford Explorer. engine doesn't crank sometimes after turning the key. have to go off then on, maybe a couple of times.

thinking about changing the starter and solenoid package. Any other suggestions?

explorer has the 4.0 flex v6 motor, towing package with 54350 miles on it. rear end whine problem corrected at 47000.

I would not go about randomly replacing parts without some more detailed troubleshooting.

Quite agreed! "Sometimes" the key must be turned several times suggests intermittent electrical contact, which could originate in ignition switch, starter solenoid contacts, starter itself, even intermittently conductive connections at the battery.

BTW, I have seen battery connections which would reliably light headlights (with engine off), yet, when cranking current to starter tried to flow through them, they just wouldn't carry it, starter failed to operate. (Such battery connections tend to get quite hot in only a few seconds, a good tip-off to their poor condition). imp
