sounds like the tranny is going bad

you dont have synchros, its an automatic.. rear drives are nothing like hondas, also rear drives i believe, are easier and pretty much the same through all the manufacturers.....

dexron is the gm stuff, you should be using mercon something

Welcome to the board!

Other gears work fine?

Your tranny requires Mercon fluid, but most fluids cover Mercon and Dexron III specifications, so I'm pretty sure you have the right fluid anyways.

If I remember right, the 1st gen Explorers had a problem with the gasket around the reverse piston/servo/whatever leaking. Replacing that gasket is easy. Just remove the pan and filter and there it is. Gives you a good time to change the filter while you're in there.

Here's what it looks like:

thanks for the replys

so should i try and change the filter and fluid first?

can too much transmission fluid cause this?

thanks

First gens have O ring problem

The 5R55E has the gasket problem. That is the location. Do a search For low/reverse servo, there is a written procedure. Basically remove those four bolts and replace the O ring on the piston. There are details on www.atcdg.com in tech under A4LD. You can get the improved double lip O ring in the gasket kit ($30) at www.bulkpart.com and the improved SPXfilter for $10. With just a pan drop youll need to buy 4 quarts.

O-ring?

Where exactly do you find the gasket kit on bulkpart.com?

I found the section with parts for the A4LD and gaskets and O-rings but it looks like individual parts that aren't near the $30

Will one of these O-rings be the one I need?

What else would come in the $30 kit? Anything that could be used when I drop the pan to change the O-ring?

which filter is the one we need here?

I figure if I am going to drop the pan to get at the O-ring might as well change the filter and go with the better designed one.

If you have specific part numbers or direct links in bulkpart.com, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot Opera House. I know you feild these A4LD questions alot, and I appreciate your patiance with the rest of us out here that want to keep our rigs going

All the information

Is on "Anybody rebuild an A4LD". This thread is located at:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=60887&goto=newpost

Think you will have to switch to page 2 for the post titled "Low/reverse servo improvement" All the numbers should be there. You get all the gaskets for a complete rebuild. More than you need but it is difficult to find a source that will piece them out. I reference them because it is one stop shopping. You can do me a favor by reading the procedure and commenting if there is anything left out. I've never gotten any feedbck on these procedures. It's pretty easy for me to overlook something because it seems obvious after doing it once.

Thanks alot

Thanks alot Opera House

I am going to see if I can track down the parts I need and see if my uncle will help me do the replace. I will read your write ups several times before I try to do this project. If I can get everything figured out enough and have my confidence built up I am going to try and dig in on it in the next couple weeks sometime.

I will let you all know how it turns out when I get through it, and I'll try to remember to snap a few photos since there is an awful lot of text to go through on this, but not to many photos or diagrams to work off of
