hi

I was wondering, should an X be able to keep up with moderate traffic while turning in intersections and whatnot...

I can, it's just that the tires start to squeal, it doesn't feel like I'm going to fast... I'm wondering if this is a design thing...

usually tires on passenger cars are angled out just a bit so that when cornering more of the tire is touching the pavement, I figure maybe the X has no angle as it's designed for off pavement driving...

should I get an alignment?

well the ttb wasn's really designed for high speed cornering but it depends on a lot of things shocks, tires, lift

granted, but I should be able to keep up with normal traffic... like K cars and the like, other trucks... or I thought so anyway

At normal traffic speeds you should have no problems, no squeeling, etc.

Check your tire pressure and treadware....that has a lot to do with it.

my moms astro van used to squeel going around corners at normal speed. Changed the tires and it went away. Her tires were in pretty rough shape.

I always thought when tires are sqeeling the suspension isn't doing its job to the max, ie your pushing the limits. Try and alignment and tire pressure first.

K-cars - :p

Yes, my X can keep up with the best of them. I probably push it too far sometimes but it actually handles very well for a truck. I recently switched tires to Bridgestone Revos and the dry handling has improved even more. Now when I make a turn the X yanks over - obviously more grippy. I've also got the 255/70/16 tires - I'm not sure if you are running the 15"s.

I would check the tire pressure, tread, and shocks.

My 94 can't get out of the way fast enough. It's SLOW! REAL SLOW! I have to gun it all the time to keep up or merge on the HW. These 3.27 gears just SUCK! I don't have any squealing though. That's usally a problem of low tire pressure. I run 30 cold all around.

Tires squealing usually has NOTHING to do with suspension. Suspension can take over when a tire blows out, but its job is to make it feel like you are not sitting on top of a steel box, and control body roll. If your tires are squealing like mad, you need to get new tires, or check the pressure on your current ones. It's not rocket science. Your tires are the most important part of your car. Don't think they don't need maintenance.

Amen!

How are the tires wearing? When was your last alignment? It normally takes a serious cornering to sqeal the tires.

No, Its after the squealing starts, then stops is when you have to worry ;)

We had a 96 XLT where the tires would squeel all the time under light cornering. Bad tires can do it, low pressure, but wouldn't even begin to look at other things until the tires themselves are looked at.

well the tires are at 26 psi all around, which is what they are supposed to be, the tread is down to 1/4 inch, but no weird wear patterns... I'm gonna get the front end looked at soon anyway, something is wrong with the front drive system.

I'll take some pics tonight

AIR YOUR TIRES UP. The tires are ABSOLUTELY not supposed to be at 26. Ford recalled that sticker due to it being a big part of the tread seperation fiasco. Air them up to at least 30. I run mine at a minimum of 32psi.

That is not what they are supposed to be 26 is too low. I know that what the door sticker says, but that's just not right I don't know why Ford says that. Every other SUV I seen had higher pressure ratings. In fact I think Ford made it highe after all the BS about the firestone tires.

35 PSI on all of my tires. I would say 32 at the lowest 35 at the highest.

I keep all my tires at 35 psi. The suggested 26 psi is (to me) to low. I feel like I am driving a slush box when its that low.

Yeah, like others said about the tires. How old are they?? How many miles do you have on them?

First thing you need to do is to disregard the 26PSI recommended rating because it's too low. In fact, Ford has sent new stickers out during the whole Firestone fiasco, advising owners to raise the tire pressure to at least 30PSI.
