If I do buy a sporttrac, I will, like all my cars, make it faster. I don't want to get that bad of gas mileage because I still commute to college 20mi each way. I really don't want to supercharge it because of the drop in mpg. I was wondering if adding a 50 shot (more? less?) would be a good idea. I'd have power when I want it and keep my gas mileage down. Good idea?
Do you easily succumb to peer pressure? If so, NOS may not be good for you. What I am trying to say is that since you are in college and all, chances are that you may drive your friends around a lot. If you can ignore their pleads to "push the button" then go for it. If not, your engine will be short lived.
NOS takes a strong will b/c you always have to be wary that it must be used infrequently. In other words, not on a daily basis. Also, I would wait until you have at least 10k miles on the truck before installing/using it. Many people on the site are against NOS, but any competent race shoop will tell you that NOS is ok when handled with care.
Go to Dead Link Removed I will be ordering this as soon as it’s available. Cost is $1,299.00 Not cheap but definitely the safest NOS system available.
The problem (if you can call it a problem) with conventional NOS systems is that when you push that button you go from 200 to 300 HP in less then a second. That puts a tremendous amount of stress on the motor. The Viper system as you will read on their site, gradually increases the NOS based on throttle position and RPMs. So you can go from 200 to 300+ HP much safer then with other systems.
Damn! I sound like a salesmen for Viper. So be warned, I haven’t used this system personally but plan on installing it into my turbo system.
There is also the ZEX kit from http://www.vanirtech.com that comes with three different jets (55hp, 65 and 75). The system supposedly takes 3-4 hours to install by a competnet mechanics and changing the jets (hp) only takes a couple minutes. I think that for a safe amount of NOS you should keep it low. I have not seen the venom unit (cause I'm too lazy right now), but a 100hp shot is too strong for the v-6... it should be saved for the v-8s that can take a little more abuse. And with your intended setup, a turbo and 100 extra hp boost from NOS may serioiusly short live your engine (even if you build up the bottom end of the engine).
The Venom kit allows for 10 to 175 HP. Also, any motor that produces very high HP numbers will have a shorter life span then lower HP motors (typically). But if the motor is built correctly and is designed for a turbo and NOS system it should last a long time. But I for one am not overly concerned with the diminished life my motor will almost certainly experience. I think most people feel the same. Why else would so many people modify their trucks and take them off roading? It’s worth it if ya ask me.
All this talk of NOS makes me want to go get some. I have my eye on the Zex system... seems easy enough for me... the only thing that bothers me is that its purple... blah!
