1997 Mounty with a 5.0. If the 0 degree timing mark is aligned with the timing arrow, is that automatically cylinder 1 at TDC of the compression stroke? I'm assuming no other problems with balancer etc.

no. you might be at TDC of the exhaust stroke. pull the number one spark plug and stick your finger over the spark plug hole. rotate the engine, when you feel your finger being pushed off the hole and you reach the TDC mark, that's TDC of the compression stroke.

That's what I thought. Can I determine TDC on compression stroke from being at 0 degrees on the timing mark and then by also looking at the position of the camshaft position sensor? I'm working alone on lower intake gaskets and the synchronizer has to come out. I have to set it to TDC compression, but unable to feel for compression at the plug while turning the crank. Looking for a one-man method to confirm I'm in the right spot.

i don't know if you can tell by looking at the CPS. if the valve cover is off, you could watch the intake valve. once it closes your on the compression stroke.

If the valve covers are not off and you have the lower intake off exposing the lifter gallery you could also watch the lifters move in the block.

TDC Exhaust, 1 lifter body will be higher in the block . TDC compression both lifter bodies will be even.

Thanks all. Got it done with a compression gauge rigged to see while turning the crank. The
Lower intake is off now with a piece of one bolt still in the head...DANG! It's the one in the front corner that was leaking. Guess I know why now. Tomorrow morning I'll be buying an easy out with fingers crossed.

Soak the broken bolt down with PB Blaster or something like that tonight and let it sit.

I like to use left hand drill bits to get broke stuff out. You just start small and keep going up in size and they usually pop out on their own.

Good Luck.

Thanks. Been soaking all night. Who carries a reverse drill bit, Sears, Lowes, etc? I'm going today for easy outs and I'll look for some. Of course it's the holiday, so choices are limited.

wow, can i come join you in the 1950's? what isn't open on holidays (besides banks and the post office) where you live?

Harbor Freight carries a 13 pc. left hand drill bit set for 9.99, they are open today, and have two stores in the Memphis area.

Okay, thanks. I knew big boxes would be open, but thought it may be a specialty fastener store type item. Think HF will hold up? I'd hate to break a bit off in there also.

Start small, let the bit do the work, shouldn't have a problem. Any bit is going to snap if you lean on the small ones.
