OBD II Decoder???

I am new to this forum. My check engine light came on the other day and won't go off. I read a few pages on this forum only to find I'm not alone. My conclusion is that the problem is probably my 02 sensors, FPR or throttle positioning sensor (but who knows). I just don't want to start throwing parts at this issue because it can get expensive. I know Pep Boy's & AutoZone will check your charging system, battery, alternator etc. with the hopes that you will purchase your replacement parts from them. So my question is, does anyone check your OBD II codes for you? I would rather not buy a OBD II decoder and I am leery of the Dealer. Let me know if I'm wrong, but using a OBD II decoder sounds like a simple process and may be a good idea for a store to perform this service. I would definitely go to that store to get my codes then buy whatever parts I need from them. I appreciate any input you may have, thanx

A reader costs about $140 and they are easy to use. I changed my sensors and that cleared my 'Check Engine' light. The reader also allows you to clear the codes the correct way.

Hey Bob... Can you bring your code reader to the bbq and tell me whats wrong with my truck??? Matt is going to show me how to clean the MAF (I can't even seem to find the MAF on my truck) so I'm hoping that is it... But if not I'd sure rather know what to fix rather than just guess what needs to be fixed and start guessing...

MoeWill, One of our local used car dealers has a mechanic and he checks the codes for free. Labor is about half also.
Might be worth checking it out in your area.

My girl friend had hers checked at the oil change place for only ten bucks, they said they will reset the light for too. Of course they wanted to clean her fuel injectors and system for about $100. She called me and I advised against that.

Someone here went to Autozone and had them pull the codes for no charge. I would try them or another auto parts store. I have also heard that Autozone will rent the code scanners but haven't tried personally (I have my own).

I went to Auto Zone.. they had the scanner there walked outside when it was -15 with wind and did it for me. I am an Auto Zone Customer for life now!
