Hey gang,

Have engine light on....hooked up scanner from Autozone as well as Firestone....neither will read Explorer....just get error.....I've heard this can be caused by bad fuse somewhere....everything seems to work...new purchase so could be overlooking something.. **Cigarette lighter/fuse is working.....radio switch wont turn off radio....could radio being ON during test cause this?..I doubt it....
'95 Eddie Bauer 4x4 / 4.0 OHV

Any suggestions appreciated....

There is a fuse for the OBD II port, fuse #29 if I'm anything close to right, it's the same one as the cigar lighter in the dash, is that port still in the bezel or is it busted?

Cigarette lighter is working....found fuse layout online....on my Explorer (according to diagram) they are separate...but both fuses are good....

I think the PCM is fuse 19.

'95 was a transition year, your port may not support standard OBDII codes. See this topic:
obd 1 or obd2?

Thanks for everybodies input...I fiddled around some more...etc....(don't think necessarily helped..) went back to Autozone ..did test...got same "error" ...asked the guy to hookup to his PC anyway to see if anything took despite message....and it DID.....got multiple misfire codes.....I would suspect coil pack but they state start with plugs/wires.....can't imagine most plugs wires being bad due to previous owner took to dealership religiously for every minor tuneup ...maintenance etc....just glad to get codes....repairing piece of cake...just like old Ranger....

If it all of a sudden started getting multiple misfires, it is not likely to be that several plugs and wires all failed at once. One plug, wire, or coil, could cause two cylinders to misfire if it's the same two that share the same spark sequence in this waste spark setup, so it would depend on which ones.

Regardless if it has been a long time since plugs and wires were replaced, it could be a good time to do that.

Offhand, you might just have an intake manifold or other vac leak and that's causing it. Coil pack, you can pull individual wires off at the coils and while cranking the engine, see if you get a spark to ground. If there's spark on all, look towards fuel, air, timing.

I'd look at the coil, I had a V6 SOHC do the same thing, $10 later at the junkyard and it's new again.

Ahhh, I missed that it was a '95. I had a '95 Pontiac that had the ODB II port under the dash, but it wasn't connected to anything either. What did Ford call their ODB I system? EECC? 15 years ago Advance Auto Parts had a scanner that would read Ford's ODB I and ODB II. You had to hook it up to something under the hood as I recall.
