I recently bought my 2002 Explorer with the 4.6. It has 123,000 miles on it. It has a strange noise when it is in Reverse, or any of the drive gears. It is a loud howl, similliar to a throw out bearing. It quiets, almost goes away when in park or neutral. it also quiets down if you "power brake" to the point where the Torque converter locks up.
I took it to the shop that covers the warranty that was on it when I purchased it. They diagnosed it as a faulty torque converter and are starting the process of replacing it under warranty.
My question is, is this a common problem? What causes it?
Is there any further things that should be checked as they put this thing back together?
Thanks for the help!
