02 XLT Explorer
Hey all. Have 3 explorers, an 02 4.6 (mine), an 04 4.0 (the one in question today) and an 05 4.0 (moms).

Today the problem child is the 04 4.0. My parents picked it up from one of my dads co workers for $300. He had said that, "It will overheat without the front bumper on, so I didn't drive it". I noticed that it was an ex fire rescue explorer. It's a bare bones white xlt with a red pin stripe job and leather with 3rd row, which I found strange for a base xlt lol. It has no trim at all, and the unpainted door handles. It's really an oddball xlt imo. So I'm going through this thing little by little trying to diagnose and repair. I hooked up a battery today and started it for the first time.

Well there's a rattle. Surprising coming from an explorer right? Haha. But I almost swear it's not timing chain related. My 02 had busted guides when I bought it. The chain had straight up eaten through the plastic and was wearing into the timing cover. I had to change oil early multiple times to get the metal shavings out. If the engine goes in it, not a big deal I have multiple mod motor parts. But anyways my moms 05 had severe chainsaw syndrome to it. It has 230k miles, and from what I can tell, chains haven't been done. We got it at 130k and haven't done them. Currently, I'm in the process of pulling that engine out to rebuild. So I'm pretty familiar with the timing chain sounds and patterns.

This doesn't sound like it. I admit, if you have someone give it a quick rev when it's warm, on the decel you can hear a very short rattle from the chains. I'm sure the guides are getting there on it, but they aren't there yet. I got underneath the driver side, and it almost sounds exhaust related? But I can't pin point it. I grabbed a pry bar and put some pressure on the cat using the frame for leverage, and it seemed to quiet down a little bit. Not a lot, but a little. Could it be an exhaust rattle I'm hearing? It's pretty effin loud lol. Not entirely characteristic of a cat shield rattle tho either. It's very loud under the truck. Up top, it's definitely loud but not like it is from the underside of the vehicle. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue before or can point me in the right direction. I might go down tomorrow and hose clamp the cats to see if that fixes it. Any direction of where to go from there would be appreciated! Thanks!
