Well this isn't a Ford....but I need some serious help here.

I was working on the 2004 Passat this morning, you know typical oil change stuff. When it was time to go for the oil filter, I figured it would still be hand tight, like when I put it on. No dice.....both my filter wrenches tore the can apart as well.....now I'm left with this.....

IM TOTALLY AT A LOSS NOW....no amount of anything I do can break those threads loose....

You managed to pretty much rip off the entire oil filter and leave the side that touches the block still attached if im seeing this correctly.

What I would do is spray it down with some PB blaster and just keep prying. The threads on the block are fairly strong so you should be ok.

Try to get something in the holes (thats what she said) like a set of clamps like these.

Just put em in then twist. There should be a harbor freight near you.

adjustable spanner in the holes

I got a chain style wrench and wrapped it around the base of the metal filter base and it eventually spun off....

I'm guessing it was stuck on the rubber seal.....

I guess I can vouch for the quality of the STP filter though.....took forever to get it down to just the base :p:

I think every mfr needs to go to the welded nut on the bottom, but some ID-10-T will use a wrench and torque it on too!

The adjustable spanner is the way to go here. A puller could distort the base that you are trying to get off, but there is a slight risk of damaging the threads on the block. You may try usin a cold chisel fit into one of the hole and use a hammer to whack away at it.

Yeah now I know how to get it off in the future.....

The Passat is really simple to do an oil change on....it sucked when the filter wouldn't let loose.

Lloyd - Luckily the filter doesnt go right to the block on this car....it has a separate standoff housing....

You showed that oil filter whos boss.

Lets hope the next STP filter doesn't meet the same fate..

The M-1 filter I run on the Exploder would probably take a week to carve off.
