so i got my x about a year ago everything was good everything clean bla bla bla. well today at work while training a new guy i was using my truck to show him things and what not. so i poped my rad cap off and it was oily. now i talked to the master tech at my shop (since im just a c tech and he worked for ford many a years) he said it may be in the raidiator because he never ever ever saw a blown head gasket on these 4.0's. so my main question is has anybody had this and what was it. also one big note there is NO coolant in oil (but the pressure from the oil while engine is running may be making it push through a crack in head gasket?:dunno:)

im going to flush it tommorow at work and run it about a week and see what happens.

also never done a head gasket on a 4.0 so any tips or trick and on a scale from one to ten if you could rate it. i also have access to all data online so that may help a bit

thanks alot guys

Blow head gaskets and cracked heads are unfortunately very common for the 4.0 OHV motors.

We rebuilt ours at 355k becuase it has been getting oil in the water (but not the other way around) for close to 50k miles.

When we had the heads checked we found that there were multiple cracks including on on the "hump" near the back of the head.

Until I saw it on our X, I never saw a blown head/gasket allow oil in the water but not the other way around.

Also, don't bother with junkyard heads.. Either have your repaired by a machine shop or buy new heads.. Also book time to replace the heads is 11 hours. If you have done it before figure 1 weekend to take it apart, the week to get them repaired and put it back together the next weekend.

well sorry to say but im trading it in. i ust dont feel like having my dd down for about a week or so. u guys will hate me when i say this but...... wrangler lifted 3 inches on 33s its a 92

i know i know. i have another exploder i wana buy for 600 might turn that into a wheeler

for what its worth:

Make sure its not trans fluid. The trans cooler in the radiator could have failed. Also check the trans fluid level. If there is coolant in it ( milky appearence) get it flushed like yesterday. Coolant dissolves the clutch material in the packs rendering the tranny useless.

yea mine has the oil cooler in the raidiator and the tranny is external but i did flush it just the other day. im thinking im going to go pick up another 4.0 rebuild it and put a few goodies in it the swap em out once the exploder finally blows

i stopped halfway into my head gasket fix. its not super difficult just labor intensive and alot of labeling and catalogging of parts and knowing how to put it all back together. it also a bit expenisve for my budged. about 500 USD. if i DIY
