well today i was doing some maint to my truck, thermostat, sensors, oil. and i found the bottom of my bell housing to be coated with still wet oil. the engine oil is aok and i there is pleanty of it. what and where is that oil coming from? there is a pretty substantial ammount on the outside of her. i figured if i had a bad rear main seal i would be losing oil in engine real fast. bad TC? dieing transmission? im not sure what to think here.

If its brown its engine oil. If its red its transmission oil. Only way to tell where it's coming from for sure is to pull the transmission out. do a quick search on how to check the transmission fluid. you need a special adaptor for the drain plug to check/fill it.

Oil WILL leak past the rear main seal if you have a lot of miles when you park on a steep incline. It's normal. It's also helping keep your chassis lubricated a little....LOL

If you are having oil pressure issues, or over heating issues I would look at it closer, and possibly address it then.

WELL THEN! i scooped some off and had it checked out by my mechanic and it came back as engine coolant + road grime. replaced manifold gaskets and im AOK. thanks for the ideas guys! was quiet a bit of a scare, as i didnt want to replace the rear main seal, or the transmission / TQ.
